Atlantis

We humans come from water. Our bodies contain water. We cannot live without water. Yet the surface of the sea separates the world above water, where we are biologically created to live, from the underwater world, where we can only survive for limited periods of time, at least without assistance. Throughout history, the underwater world has in mythology, art, and literature been referenced as a place of imaginative and psychological realms, depicting both beautiful and terrifying worlds. For many, the underwater world has served as a rich source of inspiration due to its enchanting beauty, fantastic life forms, and countless mythological depictions of sea monsters, mermaids, realms of the dead, and not least, the island of Atlantis. Among the sources on Atlantis is Plato’s account in the dialogues Timaeus and Critias, in which the island disappears into the sea in a massive natural disaster. Inspired by the story of Atlantis, these photographs unite the underwater world with earthly and man-made spaces. We are taken on a journey that asks us to pause our rationality and sense of logic, and venture into an ambivalent landscape where the boundary between the real and the unreal dissolves, between the conscious and the unconscious, the known and the unknown, the concrete and the abstract.

Vi mennesker kommer af vand. Vores kroppe indeholder vand. Vi kan ikke leve uden vand. Alligevel adskiller havoverfladen verdenen på landjorden, som vi biologisk er skabt til at leve i, og undervandsverdenen, hvor vi kun kan overleve i i begrænsede tidsrum, i hvert fald uden hjælpemidler. Gennem tiden har undervandsverdenen i mytologier, kunst og litteratur trukket referencer til fantasifulde og psykologiske universer, der både skildrer skønne og grufulde verdener. Undervandsverdenen har for mange været en rig inspirationskilde på grund af dens eventyrlige skønhed, fantastiske livsformer og utallige mytologiske skildringer af søuhyrer, havfruer, dødsriger og ikke mindst øen Atlantis. Blandt kilder om Atlantis findes Platons beretning i dialogerne Timaios og Kritias, hvor øen forsvinder i havet i en gigantisk naturkatastrofe. Med inspiration fra fortællingen om Atlantis forenes undervandsverdenen i disse fotografier med jordiske og menneskeskabte rum. Vi tages med på en rejse, hvor vi må pause vores rationalitet og logiske sans og begiver os ud i et ambivalent landskab, hvor grænsen mellem den virkelige og uvirkelige verden opløses, mellem det beviste og ubeviste, det kendte og ukendte, det konkrete og abstrakte.
